Leo O’Brian is a principal with ima, bringing an innovative mix of landscape architecture expertise, skilled project leadership, and effective consensus building. O’Brian lends his expertise to the firm’s new community projects, carefully integrating urban design and sustainable practices with proven design solutions.
Leo is currently leading the community-wide landscape architecture for the Irvine Company’s newest village located in Irvine, California. This village contains a variety of residential options, community and neighborhood parks, park linkages, apartments and an Irvine Unified School District middle school. Leo also led the landscape architectural design team in winning the Los Angeles Community College District Southwest College campus rennovation.
O’Brian served for more than 11 years as vice president of landscape architecture in the Urban Planning and Design Group of The Irvine Company. While with The Irvine Company, O’Brian worked on a number of the company’s most celebrated new communities within Irvine, including Northpark and Woodbury, using a series of streets, parks and public spaces to integrate, link and enhance the distinctive appeal of each village. He also guided the environmentally sensitive Shady Canyon golf resort community. At Crystal Cove, O’Brian worked with numerous designers to create a signature luxury coastal community on a unique hillside setting with extensive outdoor retail and restaurant amenities. In addition to his community planning projects, O’Brian also worked with the company’s various development groups, including commercial and mixed use centers, retail and recreation centers, and public and private parks.
Prior to joining the Irvine Company, O’Brian worked with international design firms, with projects on the East Coast, across the South and throughout California. He earned his master’s degree in landscape architecture from Harvard Graduate School of Design. He is a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects and the Urban Land Institute.
