The Inland Empire Utilities Agency (IEUA) of San Bernardino County has taken the lead in demonstrating urban sustainability technologies in the workplace, home and recreational communities. The buildings for the agency’s new headquarters feature recyclable materials, energy conserving windows and exteriors and organic building materials in order to achieve LEED platinum standards. The building’s parking lot was developed as a demonstration project, with innovative porous parking lot material that reduces heat absorption.
Future plans call for a 37 acre (15 hectare) Chino Creek Park and Demonstration Gardens surrounding the headquarters. Features include: gardens, a riparian habitat restoration project and water feature as a regional attraction that will demonstrate to the community on how to apply sustainability principles to their own residences. The park will also have fields for active sports.
